When's the Best Time to Play Golf in Tasmania?

If you're planning a golf trip to Tasmania, one of the first questions you'll probably ask is, "When's the best time to go?"
The good news is there's no wrong answer. Especially this year when we've had blue sky days and mild weather well into winter. We've been wearing short sleeves on sunny days (always with our Tassie tuxedo in the bag, just in case!)

Unlike many golfing destinations that have a short peak season, Tasmania offers something special throughout the year. Each season brings its own character - from endless summer evenings to crisp autumn mornings and dramatic winter skies. Add world-class golf, exceptional food and wine, spectacular scenery and warm Tasmanian hospitality, and you've got a destination that's worth visiting whenever your diary allows.
Here's what you can expect in each season.
Spring (September to November)
Spring is one of Tasmania's best-kept secrets.
The courses are lush and green after winter rains, wildflowers are blooming and the days are becoming noticeably longer. Temperatures are generally mild, making it comfortable to walk 18 or even 36 holes without the heat you'll find on mainland courses.
It's also one of the quieter times to visit. Accommodation is often easier to secure, restaurants are a little less busy and you'll have more flexibility when booking tee times.
Spring is ideal for golfers who enjoy cooler conditions and want to experience Tasmania before the summer holiday crowds arrive. October is typically Hobart's windiest month, but it's nothing you wouldn't experience on the links courses of Scotland and Ireland.
Perfect for: Great playing conditions, sightseeing, gardens and relaxed travel.
Summer (December to February)
Summer is Tasmania's busiest tourism season - and for good reason.
Long daylight hours mean you can comfortably fit in an early morning round, enjoy a leisurely lunch and still have time to explore wineries, distilleries or Hobart's waterfront before dinner.
Average temperatures are generally much milder than mainland Australia, making Tasmania an attractive escape from extreme summer heat. While occasional warm days occur, the climate is usually ideal for golf.
This is also when Tasmania is buzzing. Restaurants, festivals, markets and cellar doors are in full swing, creating an atmosphere that makes every golf trip feel like a holiday.
Because it's peak season, accommodation and tee times can book out well in advance, particularly around Christmas and January, so early planning is recommended.
Perfect for: Long golf days, food and wine experiences, festivals and first-time visitors.

Autumn (March to May)
If you ask us, autumn is the best time of year in Tasmania.
The weather often settles into calm, sunny days with crisp mornings and comfortable afternoon temperatures. The changing colours across vineyards, parks and country roads provide a spectacular backdrop as you travel between courses.
Autumn is particularly popular with golfers because conditions are often consistent, making it a wonderful time to experience Tasmania's renowned links courses.
It's also harvest season, meaning wineries are buzzing, fresh local produce is everywhere and many restaurants are showcasing seasonal menus.
For visitors who love combining golf with Tasmania's famous food and wine scene, autumn is hard to beat.
Perfect for: Premium golfing conditions, wineries, gourmet experiences and photography.
Winter (June to August)
Winter surprises many visitors.
While Tasmania certainly experiences cooler weather, winter also delivers beautiful clear days, fresh coastal air and peaceful golf courses.
If you're flexible with your itinerary, winter can be an excellent time to visit. Accommodation is often more affordable, popular restaurants are easier to book and you'll enjoy a slower, more relaxed pace.
After a morning round, there's nothing better than settling beside an open fire with a glass of Tasmanian pinot noir or a locally distilled whisky.
Winter won't suit everyone, but for golfers who enjoy crisp conditions and fewer crowds, it offers a unique experience. We don't get a lot of rain in Hobart (it's Australia's second driest capital city) so while it might not be blue sky every day, it's rare that rain will really set in.
Perfect for: Value, quieter courses, cosy food and wine experiences and relaxed travel.

Tasmania's Weather: Expect Four Seasons in One Day
One thing every visitor should know is that Tasmania's weather can change quickly.
A sunny morning can become breezy by the afternoon before clearing again an hour later. That's all part of the experience.
The secret is simple: pack layers.
A lightweight waterproof jacket, a warm mid-layer and a cap or beanie will have you prepared for almost anything, regardless of the season.
Fortunately, changing conditions are part of what makes links golf so enjoyable. Every round is different, even if you've played the course before. Visitors to 7Mile this season were stunned at how different it could be on consecutive days.
It's About More Than the Golf
Of course, the golf is only part of the reason people visit Tasmania.
Many of our guests tell us the moments they remember most happened away from the fairways.
Fresh oysters overlooking the coast.
A long lunch at a cool-climate winery.
Sampling award-winning single malt whisky.
Exploring historic villages.
Experiencing the globally acclaimed art gallery (and now library) that is MONA.
Dining at some of Australia's best regional restaurants.
The beauty of a Tasmanian golf holiday is that every day offers something new, and there's plenty to enjoy for travelling partners who may not play golf.
So, When Should You Visit?
The honest answer is that it depends on the sort of holiday you're looking for.
Choose spring if you enjoy fresh conditions, fewer crowds and beautiful landscapes.
Visit in summer for long daylight hours, vibrant events and the full Tasmanian holiday experience.
Book autumn if your ideal trip combines outstanding golf with world-class food and wine.
Consider winter if you value quieter courses, excellent accommodation deals and cosy evenings by the fire.
The best part is that there's no single "right" season. Tasmania's championship courses can be enjoyed all year round, with each season offering its own unique appeal.
